Air filters

Choosing the right filters for your heating/cooling system is critical to keeping the air clean in your home,  controlling your energy costs, and maintaining the health of your furnace/heatpump/air conditioner.  The most important step in air quality improvement is to make sure that all the air that goes through the furnace is filtered.  As air flows through the filter, much of the indoor  air pollutants are trapped.  How much of the indoor pollutants get trapped depends on the type of filter you choose.

However, all furnace filters must either be cleaned or replaced regularly.  As more and more pollutants are trapped in the furnace filter, more and more pressure is needed to circulate the air.  This will cause your furnace to work harder, this in turn increases your energy bills because the furnace has to work longer and harder to keep the indoor temperature at the thermostat setting.  In time,  this strain on the furnace to push air through a plugged air filter will eventually start to affect the life of your furnace. Most residential systems have disposable filters. These should be checked every two months (once a month during peak use) and replaced when necessary. Permanent filters should be cleaned in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Under no circumstances should you operate your system without filters. To do so could lead to a need for more frequent cleaning of the heat exchangers.

It is almost the same story as "The Want of A  Nail" and no less as important.  Choosing the right furnace filter, and cleaning the filter regularly are essential to your  health and the health of your furnace.

CHS Services, Inc. carries a wide variety of filters to fit every need.  Listed below are some of the more common types.

Fiberglass Furnace Filters - These air filters are for general use and catch relatively large airborne particles such as lint and dust. They are made of course fiberglass mats mounted in a frame. Fiberglass furnace filters typically come in 1" or 2" sizes. They should be changed every 30 days.

Pleated Furnace Filters - Pleated furnace filters are generally made of a high-loft, non-woven cotton/synthetic media blend. Pleated filters are an upgrade from disposable fiberglass furnace filters. Most pleated furnace filters will last up to 90 days. They also have a V shape pleat which allows for greater surface area and higher dust and dirt retention. Pleated furnace filters are constructed with a moisture resistant board frame.

Electrostatic Permanent Furnace Filters - Electrostatic furnace filters are a permanent furnace filter that you never replace. When it gets dirty you just wash it with a mild detergent and warm water and put it back in your furnace.
